Sergej Gratchev was born in 1970 in Ivanovo, Russia. From the age of eight, he studied at a music school and seven years later entered a music college. In 1994 Sergej graduated from the renowned Saratov State Conservatory with highest honors. During the course of his studies he won prizes in several music competitions:

Sergej currently studies with Jo Haazen at the Royal Carillon School "Jef Denyn" in Mechelen, Belgium. In 1998 he was a finalist in the Fourth Queen Fabiola International Carillon Competition.
